BIO

Marisol Martinez’s transformation from media executive to visual artist is as vibrant as the colors she employs in her art. Previously the Vice President of Video at Atlantic Records, Martinez made her mark in the world of Video, Music & Television. She is now finding her pulse as a visual artist whose use of color reflects a complicated, exuberant life.

Marisol is a painter who contrasts both thru color and subject matter, often spatial as well as prismatic. The unguided stillness of each shape is a meditative process individually created to compliment the other. The interconnection of shapes and colors offer insight into Martinez unique experience of the world creating a visually spiritual vocabulary. She confronts the curious, the heartbreaking and the maddening experiences of living life so close to death. Daughter of a funeral director, Martinez was raised in a life defined by death. This familial legacy has allowed Martinez to tap into a spirituality that’s become the mystical centerpiece of her work.

Currently, Martinez lives in NYC and has lived and studied in Paris, Miami and Los Angeles. Her works emerge from mornings spent at the funeral home, and afternoons and evenings spent in the studio—and their constant mingling of presences. Broader inspiration follows a family lineage of women whose creativity encouraged Martinez to express herself visually. Artist influences such as Carmen Herrera, Agnes Martin, Alma Thomas, Luchita Hurtado & Josef Albers are deeply faceted components in her process and work.

She earned her BBA in Design/Art Marketing from Parsons School of Design/The New School, having attended both New York and Paris campuses.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Rooted in the sheer simplicity of everyday life, my work ruminates on the human experience, creating a dialogue between form and color, societal narratives, humanitarian issues, and my own lived experience. Primarily through explorations of color dynamics and skin tones, I use geometric abstraction to delve into the unconscious patterns inherent in our daily lives. Manifested through a personalized visual language, a reference to the essence of life in my work, I am deeply invested in discovering and rediscovering the vast spectrum of our experiences from happiness to sorrow—a vivid signifier of life well lived.
